Oscars 2018 - The Nominations

500 Days Of Film Reviews The Nominations For The 90th Academy Awards

The nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards (which take place on Sunday 4th March) were announced today. Guillermo del Toro's fantasy romance, The Shape Of Water, leads the race with an impressive 13 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Score and Best Lead Actress - in recognition of Sally Hawkins's superb performance.

Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk has a total of eight nominations - including Best Director and Best Picture. Meanwhile, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri came away with seven nominations including Best Film, Best Lead Actress (for Frances McDormand's brilliant performance) and Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell).

The category for Best Director is notable because it features Greta Gerwig - the first female film director to get a nomination for eight years (the last nomination was Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker - an award that she won) and incredibly the fifth woman ever to be nominated for this award.

Director Jordan Peele's nomination for Get Out makes this category really exciting. While the smart money is on Guillermo del Toro, it is wonderful to see Peele's fantastic work being recognised by the Academy.

Best Cinematography is, once again, a tough category to predict. Could this (finally) be Roger Deakins's year for Blade Runner 2049? Or will the Academy honour Hoyte van Hoytema's incredible work on Dunkirk? It is also fantastic to see Rachel Morrison nominated for her stunning cinematography on Mudbound. Morrison is the first female cinematographer to be nominated for an Oscar.

Of course, in every year we have the so-called Oscar Snubs. This year, this sad group includes Martin McDonagh. The director failed to receive a nomination for Three Billboards. In addition, Blade Runner 2049 did not get a Best Picture nod. Meanwhile, James Franco lost out in the Best Actor category (perhaps as a result of the scandal taking place in his personal life).

Surprises too in Best Documentary as neither Jane nor the stunning City Of Ghosts made the cut.

However, as I always say... the Oscars is the start of a great film conversation and not the end of one...
