500 Days Of Film Reviews The 2018 BAFTA Nominations
The Shape Of Water leads the nominations for 2018's BAFTA awards, which take place on 18th February. Guillermo del Toro's film has been nominated for 12 awards including Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Original Music and Cinematography.
Meanwhile, Darkest Hour and Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri each received nine nominations, Blade Runner 2049 and Dunkirk both have eight, I, Tonya has five and Call Me By Your Name and Phantom Thread have been nominated in four categories.
While picking up nominations for Original Screenplay, Leading Actress (Saoirse Ronan) and Supporting Actress (Laurie Metcalf), Lady Bird - an Oscar front-runner - failed to join the Best Film or Director (for Greta Gerwig) categories.
In a year featuring several powerful films from female directors (including Gerwig, Kathryn Bigelow for Detroit and Dee Rees for Mudbound to name but three), it feels disappointing that the BAFTAs have all male Best Film and Director nominations. The big question is, who is going to tell Natalie Portman?
Also surprisingly, Steven Spielberg's film, The Post, failed to receive any nominations. However, this left a spot open for Denis Villeneuve (nominated for Director) and his film. Blade Runner 2049 has been nominated for Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Make Up & Hair, Sound and Special Visual Effects.
Another surprise (but a warm and fuzzy one) is Hugh Grant's nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Paddington 2. In addition, it is great to see Annette Benning and Jamie Bell recognised (Leading Actress / Leading Actor) for their wonderful work in Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool. The film is also up for the Adapted Screenplay award.
One of the toughest categories is Best Animated Film. I certainly wouldn't want to choose between Loving Vincent, My Life As A Courgette and Coco.
The Rising Star Award (the only category to accept votes from the British public) is also tricky. Nominations for this award include Daniel Kaluuya, Timothée Chalamet, Tessa Thompson, Florence Pugh, and Josh O’Connor.
